COMPASSION CO-OPERATION

A couple of inspirational quotes about co-operation:
“We may have all come on different ships, but we're in the same boat now.” Martin Luther King
“If you want to be incrementally better: Be competitive. If you want to be exponentially better: Be co-operative.” Unknown

SPECIAL CHARACTER:

A reminder that the third session of “Mass In Slow Motion” is being held this Wednesday 30th June, 5.30-8.30 at St Joseph’s Church. Please bring along a plate of finger food to share for dinner.

Thank you to Christina Chow for organising the Missionariesfrom ICPE Mission to come along to speak to the children on Thursday morning. The missionaries have been running a programme at Our Lady Help of Christians in Fitzroy and visiting local primary and secondary schools. They presented a session to the Junior and Senior school - it was great

DISCO/PIZZA LUNCH:
What a wonderful night was had by all at the disco held at Vogeltown School Hall last Friday night. It was great to see the children got into the spirit of the occasion and dressed up as part of the ‘Monster Mash’ theme. A very big thank you to our hard working Home & School and helpers for making this possible for our children. $350.00 was raised.

Also thank you to the Home & School for organising our Pizza lunch that was held at school today...always a popular lunch option for students and teachers!

KELLY SPORTS:
Kelly Sports held their last fundamental skills session this week and we will be having a fun afternoon this coming Monday.

Please ensure all children have their sport’s uniforms with them at school.

CURIOSITY KITS:
All children who have Curiosity Kits need to return them to my office on Tuesday please. They will be distributed again after the holidays.

PRINCIPAL’S CONFERENCE:
As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, I will not be at school next week as I am attending the New Zealand Principal’s Conference. Anne Dent will be in charge in my absence.

STAFF LEAVING:
I would like to take this opportunity to say farewell and thankyou to two of our staff members who are leaving us at the end of this term. Firstly to Terry Stowers who has been involved in taking classes for computer lessons over the last few years. Thank you Terry for your hard work and dedication to our school and children. We hope to see Terry back from time to time when we call him in to help us out with computer issues.

Also thank you to Clare Howarth who has been with us for Term 1 & 2 of this year. Clare has been relieving while Pat Swanson has been away on Science Fellowship leave. Thank you Clare for all you have done during your time at St Pius. We have really appreciated the dedication you have shown to your job and our children. Hopefully we’ll see Clare back in a relieving capacity after she returns from her trip overseas.

MATHATHON:
The Home and School Committee have organised a Mathathon, similar to our very successful Spellathon which was held last year. Your child/ren will have brought home today: Mathsathon instructions, a sponsorship form, and the Maths problems they need to learn. Please return your completed sponsorship form to your child/ren’s teacher by Monday 21st July.

The children will be tested on Friday 30th July. A great opportunity over the holidays to get sponsors. We urge you to support this fundraising venture - as well as raising funds for your children’s education, the children will also be learning.

MUSIC FESTIVAL & FANCY DRESS:
I just wanted to alert you to a couple of important dates for your diaries for next term. All Year 5 & 6 children are involved in the New Plymouth Music Festival which is held every second year where primary and intermediate school children participate in a wonderful celebration of music. This is being held on the night of Thursday 16th September, so please keep this free.

Also our Fancy Dress is being held on Wednesday 22nd September and all children from St Pius are expected to attend this evening school event.....it’s always lots of fun!

CAMP:
In Term 4, from 10th-12th November, all Year 5 & 6 children will be going on camp to Vertical Horizons. This camp is held every two years. The cost of the camp for 2 nights and 3 days will be approximately $130 per child and covers food, accommodation and activities. (The cost will be confirmed next term) There will be more information about this next term, but I thought you may like to get the children to start doing some jobs around home in the holidays to help pay their way towards the camp.

HAPPY HOUR:
There will be a Happy Hour at the end of next week to celebrate good behaviour over the last month.

NEWSLETTER:
This is the last newsletter for the term. Stacey Williams will send out a notice to children playing sport next week so they know times and venues for their games. School accounts are attached to this newsletter for families with outstanding balances. If you are experiencing difficulties please do come and see me when school resumes in Term 3.

END OF TERM:
Next Friday 2nd July school finishes at 3pm for the School Holidays. School resumes on Monday 19th July at 8.55am. I would like to thank you for all your support again this term and wish you all a very happy holiday with your families and we look forward to seeing you back for Term 3. Pat Swanson will be back in Room 1 at the beginning of Term 3.

ALL WHITES UPDATE:
As this newsletter goes to print the exciting World Cup Fever continues. For those of us who gave up their much needed sleep to support our wonderful All Whites in the wee small hours of this morning a match well worth watching. We were marked within the rank outsiders of this World Cup yet have shown great tenacity against some of the biggest names in the world of Football. What a great experience for both the players and
people of New Zealand. Dare we hope that our country may now embrace Football as a sport to be supported much like The Silver Ferns or, dare we mention, The All Blacks? The boys can hold their heads up high, after all they did finish ahead of Italy who are ranked number 5 in the world!

Aaaahhh Football, the beautiful game!
